The executive committee of the Lebanese University's full-time faculty union says approval of a tenure scheme for hourly-contracted lecturers can no longer be delayed.
The union said in a statement that it had reviewed pending matters and found extensive delays in processing tenure for contracted hourly lecturers, despite years of government promises and decisions that have not materialised.
The union characterised approval of the tenure file as a national and academic entitlement that cannot be postponed, describing it as a right for qualified contracted colleagues based on academic merit, seniority and the university's actual need.
The union warned that ignoring the matter perpetuates injustice and instability affecting a large cohort of lecturers and undermines the national university's ability to fulfil its role.
The union called on government officials to take practical steps and move quickly to implement previous commitments and decisions on the matter, and said funding must be secured for the university and the faculty mutual aid fund to cover the financial obligations that would result.
The union said continued delays would have serious consequences and that it would not stand idle or compromise on defending lecturers' rights. It said it had put all escalation options on the table and was ready to confront the issue until the demand is met.
