A joint team from the Litani River Authority and the Industry Ministry inspected slaughterhouses in Badnayel on September 1st and documented environmental and operational breaches.
The Litani River Authority and the Industry Ministry conducted the inspection to verify the legal status of the facilities, their operational procedures, waste treatment methods, and compliance with environmental rules governing the discharge of blood, waste and contaminated water into waterways.
The inspections revealed varying conditions across the six facilities examined. Youssef Aqil's abattoir is currently inactive with a new investor; the committee required a liquid waste treatment station before operations resume and asked the Industry Ministry to formalize an investment agreement meeting legal and environmental standards.
Ali Hassan Ali Hassan's facility is unlicensed and inactive for slaughter, with blood residue present inside. The owner stated current activity is limited to buying, cutting and selling meat.
Muhammad Abdo Al-Ramah's abattoir is unlicensed but operating normally despite a prior closure order from the Industry Ministry. It has a liquid waste treatment station; samples will be taken later to verify treatment effectiveness.
Ghaith Ali Hassan's facility is unlicensed and continues operating under a previous closure order, with slaughter and cutting operations underway. Liquid waste is discharged into septic pits; water quality will be assessed through sampling.
Zaher Aqil's abattoir is unlicensed and currently inactive, though the owner said he is completing paperwork with the Industry Ministry. A new treatment station has been installed and will be tested operationally before activity resumes.
Abbas Tawfiq Suleiman's abattoir is licensed, operates a liquid waste treatment station discharging treated water to the sewage network, and sends solid waste to Zahleh landfill. The committee requested closure of an outlet on the treatment station pipes to prevent potential unauthorized discharge.
The Litani River Authority said inspections aim not only to document violations but to ensure removal of pollution sources and proper waste treatment before discharge. The authority will continue field monitoring, collect samples from operating facilities and those resuming activity, and conduct laboratory analysis to verify compliance with environmental standards.
