A commemoration marks the fiftieth anniversary of the massacre at Tel al-Zaatar refugee camp, established by the Red Crescent in 1949.
The Red Crescent established Tel al-Zaatar camp in 1949 on five square kilometres of private land that had served as a British military base during the Second World War. Palestinian refugees who had been displaced by militias from villages around the Hula Plain, Khalsa, and areas near Safad, Jaffa and Haifa initially settled there.
The camp grew over the following decades and became a significant Palestinian settlement in Lebanon. The anniversary marks a major moment in the history of the conflict and its effects on displaced communities.
