Education Minister Rima Karami outlined plans to the Prime Minister and senior education officials for opening the academic year, with particular focus on schools in the south affected by conflict.
Karami chaired an administrative meeting with the director general of education and unit heads to discuss preparations for the new school year. She briefed them on her discussions with Prime Minister Nawaf Salam at a cabinet meeting held at the Grand Serail.
The ministry plans to address varied conditions in the south, including damage to schools in the Nabatieh university district and other areas. The ministry is developing alternatives for destroyed or partially damaged school buildings and rehabilitation plans.
Karami outlined a strategy to consolidate incomplete classes and consolidate students in unified buildings according to individual circumstances, applying clear standards aimed at improving the quality of education while reducing waste and enhancing performance.
She stated that detailed plans for each issue would be announced progressively. Karami informed Salam of her planned visit to the south on Wednesday and received his guidance.
In a separate meeting, Karami led discussions on developing the official examination system. The session included an assessment of current conditions, identification of strengths and weaknesses, and examination of international best practices in examination development and digitalization.
Scenarios adapted to the Lebanese context and selected international models were presented to enable the working team to benefit from the proposed approaches and reach the required effectiveness.
The meeting covered all aspects of the current examination system, including administrative, logistical, educational and legal preparations, as well as improvements in digitalization and governance. Collaboration involves the ministry, the Educational Research and Development Center, and the Guidance and Counselling Apparatus.
Karami thanked experts and supporters from the French Development Agency and UNICEF for their work on the plan, noting it assessed conditions and incorporated ideas, proposals and plans based on diagnosis of the situation and application of experiences from around the world.
