Unknown assailants threw stones at a Maronite church in al-Mina, northern Lebanon, on Sunday morning, breaking windows.
Saint Thérèse Church for Maronites in al-Mina, in the north, came under attack early Sunday when unidentified people hurled stones at it, shattering some windows.
Security authorities opened an investigation into the incident. Tawfiq Zuraiqah, head of al-Mina municipalities union, visited the church that morning with union members.
Zuraiqah condemned the attack as contrary to the values and traditions of al-Mina's residents and as a violation of the sanctity of places of worship and principles of coexistence. He stated that al-Mina has been and will remain a model of brotherhood, affection and mutual respect among its people of all faiths, and that any attack on a place of worship is an attack on the entire city and its inhabitants.
He called on security agencies to move quickly to identify the assailants and hold them accountable under law, to prevent similar incidents that risk stoking sectarian tensions and destabilizing the area. He stressed solidarity with the church and its congregation, saying al-Mina would remain united against anyone attempting to harm its security and cohesion.
